Hello!
I’m John Caves. I moved to Brunswick in 2019, and I’ve served on the Brunswick History Commission since 2020.
Before then, I grew up in Germantown, attended college and graduate school, and served in the U.S. Army as an artillery officer in Alaska and Oklahoma.
I’m married, I have two young kids, and I commute on the MARC train to Washington, D.C., each week when I’m not working remotely from home. I live on 5th Avenue near Souder Road, and I’m in Brunswick for the long haul. My kids will grow up here.
I’ve been watching Mayor and Council meetings since shortly after I moved here, and I think I’ve got something unique to offer. Brunswick is growing quickly and changing as a result. Finding a way to make the most of that while keeping some continuity with the way things are now is going to determine the success of this town. If we do it right, we’ll thrive. If we don’t, we’ll be frustrated, divided, and stuck watching other cities do things that we can’t seem to figure out.
I can see Brunswick both for what it was and what it can be.
I combine the perspective of a (relatively) new resident with a deep appreciation for Brunswick’s heritage. I gained that through my four years on the History Commission, where I had many, many opportunities to learn from people who have lived here a long time. I can see Brunswick both for what it was and what it can be. I think I can do right by Brunswick, both old and new.
This is my first run at elected office. But my time in the Army gave me an appreciation for the responsibilities of leadership and the difficult trade-offs that come with making decisions that affect others. I won’t promise the moon. What I can promise to bring to the City Council is good character, hard work, and careful judgment.
Please take a few moments to look at my vision for Brunswick, my values regarding elected office, my beliefs about the role of local government, and my thoughts and ideas about various issues facing our city. You can also learn more about me, though I’d like nothing more than the chance to meet you in person.
I hope you’ll give me a chance.
Thank you,
John
